![]() The best part of Mimestream for me is its pure speed. If and when those come, Mimestream will be a great tool for even more people, but as is always good advice, buy products for the features they have now, not for what they may add in the future. The company’s roadmap does show iOS and iPadOS versions in the works, as well as support for IMAP and Outlook accounts down the road. There is no iPhone or iPad app, certainly no Windows app, and there’s no way to use this with your Outlook, iCloud, or any other email provider besides Google. Mimestream is currently Mac-only and only works with Google accounts. I’d usually put the caveats towards the end of a piece like this, but I think it’s important to note early on who this app is actually useful for. ![]() ![]() Gmail in Apple Mail just isn’t that great, and Mimestream feels like the answer to the question, what if you took all the good things about Apple Mail and then made it sync quickly & reliably, made it work with all of Gmail’s proprietary features, and wrapped it in the fastest app on your Mac? Gmail and Mac Only Mimestream is a native Mac app built by Neil Jhaveri, who worked on Apple Mail at Apple for several years, and it shows in this new project. These apps will often differentiate themselves with added functionality that Apple simply doesn’t do in their app, and often that’s great! We’ve covered a lot of these apps here on The Sweet Setup, and our current pick for the best third-party email app has a ton of things that Apple’s app doesn’t.īut what if you generally like Apple Mail, you just wished it was more reliable, faster, and was a little more customizable? If you’re a Gmail user on the Mac, then Mimestream may very well be the app you’ve been waiting for. It is relying on the simple and familiar interface for Mac users and tight integration with Gmail to stand out from the competition. There are a million email apps out there for Apple devices, and each of these apps needs to convince people that they should use them instead of Apple’s built-in (and free) Mail app. Mimestream is going up against other email clients like Boxy, Edison Mail, and former Google exec’s app Shortwave. However, the startup is offering the annual plan at a discounted launch price of $29.99 for the first year until June 9. After that, you have to pay either $4.99/month or $49.99/year. You can use Mimestream for free with a 14-day trial. The app also features a menu bar extra - when you click on the menu bar icon, you can quickly check for any unread messages without opening the app. Plus, you can set a notification schedule so that you aren’t disturbed by unnecessary notifications. You can also assign different colors to accounts to differentiate between emails in the unified view. With the new launch, Mimestream will also support profiles like “Work” and “Personal” so that you can separate different accounts. This deep integration with Gmail's API enhances Mimestream's overall experience, bringing it closer to the functionality and familiarity of Gmail's web interface. Additionally, the app extends support for Gmail aliases, mentions, code blocks, Markdown substitutions, undo send functionality, as well as the ability to send and archive emails. Mimestream, using the Gmail API’s capabilities, enables easy importation of various elements such as signatures, server-side filters, templates, labels, and vacation responses. The app embraces trackpad gestures, offers support for dark themes, allows users to link email profiles to Focus Filters, and provides customizable keyboard shortcuts. As a native app, Mimestream seamlessly integrates with the macOS, ensuring a cohesive user experience. These include familiar features such as the utilization of blue dots to denote unread emails, a three-column layout, and action buttons conveniently placed in the top bar. Jhaveri emphasized that the company remains self-funded, maintaining its independence as they continue to refine and advance Mimestream's functionalities.-ĭrawing from his experience with Apple's Mail app, Neil Jhaveri has incorporated design elements in Mimestream that resemble the default Mac application. Despite being a relatively small operation, with only five individuals involved, Mimestream has garnered attention during its beta phase, attracting over 167,000 users eager to experience its capabilities. While the app's compatibility is currently limited to Gmail accounts, Jhaveri and his team aim to expand its reach in the future. Mimestream, which currently exclusively supports Gmail, utilizes Gmail's API for seamless integration.
